The Central Government may introduce a bill to increase both the number of Lok Sabha seats and the reservation for women within the House. The government is proposing to raise the current tally of 543 Lok Sabha seats to 816, of which 273 seats would be reserved for women. Preparations are underway to carry out the delimitation exercise based on data from the 2011 Census. Under this plan, 33% of the total seats would be reserved for women; based on the proposed figure of 816 seats, this would translate to 273 seats being reserved for women. The government may introduce a new amendment bill during the ongoing session to give legal effect to this process.
