For most of my life, when I told a story about Marlene, I began with my childhood. Writing Calling Marlene made me wonder what I was leaving outside the frame. Marlene is from Trinidad. I’m an Italian Jewish kid from Long Island. This week I followed the history that helped bring us into the same house: migration, jobs, relatives, referrals, and a city full of people who knew someone. The history answers part of the question. Our relationship is another part. Want to know when Calling Marlene is coming to a theater near you? Calling Marlene is a documentary series following the real process of trying to take a deeply personal one-man show from the page into the world. The series follows the playwriting and production journey as it actually happens — the decisions, collaborators, mistakes, setbacks, developmental performances and opportunities that determine what the show becomes. There is no promised destination. How far can one finished script go?
