“Uncomfortable” Reality of King Oyo’s Death | LazyPod Ep6

King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, the late Omukama of Tooro, was laid to rest on September 12, 2026, at the Karambi Royal Tombs in Fort Portal, Uganda. Oyo died at the age of 34 while receiving cancer treatment in the United States. His death brought an end to a remarkable 31-year reign that began when he became king at just three years old following the death of his father, King Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. His body was returned to Uganda on September 4 and taken to Tooro, where thousands of mourners, cultural leaders, politicians and members of the royal family gathered to pay their final respects. The funeral included a church service at St John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal before the king’s casket was taken in procession to the royal tombs. He was buried alongside his ancestors in a ceremony that combined Christian and traditional Tooro customs. Oyo's death also triggered a succession dispute within the royal family. While his family has spoken of a reported son who could be his heir, the Tooro royal clan selected Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, Oyo's cousin, as the new king. Beyond the succession controversy, Oyo leaves behind a legacy as one of Africa’s most recognisable traditional rulers. He became king as a child and grew into a prominent cultural leader who represented Tooro for more than three decades. His burial marked the end of an extraordinary chapter in the history of the Tooro Kingdom, as the people of Tooro said farewell to the king they had watched grow from a young child on the throne into a respected adult monarch.
