If you’ve never made homemade flour tortillas, come on — your Tía Amber is gonna show you how. ❤️
These tortillas come out soft, flexible, and perfect for breakfast tacos, fajitas, carne guisada, or honestly just eating warm with a little butter.
🌮 HOMEMADE FLOUR TORTILLAS
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick), or your preferred fat
1½ cups warm-to-hot water
Mix the flour, salt, and baking powder together. Crumble the butter into the flour with your hands until the mixture has the texture of wet sand.
Slowly add the warm water, a little at a time, mixing until your masa comes together. Knead for about 10 minutes.
Cover the masa with plastic wrap or a plastic bag and let it rest for 20 minutes.
Divide the dough into approximately 24 testales (dough balls). Cover them again and let them rest for another 10 minutes.
Lightly flour your work surface and rolling pin. Give each testal a light coating of flour, press it down, and roll it into a thin tortilla. Try not to overwork it — about 8 passes with your rolling pin should do it. Roll until the tortilla is thin enough that you can just begin to see the pattern of your work surface through it.
Heat your comal or griddle over medium heat.
Cook the tortilla for 15–20 seconds on the first side, until you begin seeing bubbles and blisters. Flip and cook another 15–20 seconds. Flip one final time and cook for about 15 seconds.
Transfer immediately to a tortilla warmer.
TIP: If you use a plastic tortilla warmer, line it with a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. This helps absorb excess moisture so your tortillas stay soft without getting soggy.
Makes approximately 24 tortillas.
And congratulations… you know how to make tortillas now. 😂❤️
