In this rare historical footage, Odo Seikichi (Seikichi Odo, 1926–2002) demonstrates Passai Kata as practiced within his Okinawa Kenpo tradition. Passai is one of the classical kata of Okinawan karate, with different versions preserved in numerous Okinawan and Japanese systems. Often known as Bassai in Japanese karate, the kata provides an excellent example of how forms can change as they are transmitted through different teachers, generations, and martial arts lineages. What makes footage like this so valuable is that we have the opportunity to watch Odo Sensei's actual movement rather than simply relying on photographs, written descriptions, or later interpretations. As you watch his performance, pay particular attention to: 🥋 Stance and posture 🥋 Weight transfer and balance 🥋 Changes in direction and angle 🥋 Hand positioning and striking mechanics 🥋 Timing and rhythm 🥋 Body movement and power generation 🥋 Close-range techniques 🥋 Transitions between movements 🥋 Possible applications contained within the kata When studying old footage, I don't think we should immediately look at differences and decide that one version is right and another is wrong. Instead, we should ask: Why did this teacher perform the movement this way? That question can tell us much more about kata than simply trying to duplicate the outward appearance. Odo Sensei was known for preserving and teaching an extensive curriculum of Okinawa Kenpo Karate and Kobudo. Historical footage of his kata gives today's martial artists an opportunity to examine how he approached posture, movement, timing, power, and technique. A very special thank you to Sensei John Snyder for providing this video and allowing this historical footage of Odo Seikichi to be shared. As a student of Odo Sensei, John Snyder has helped preserve important footage and information that gives today's practitioners an opportunity to see these martial arts as they were demonstrated by an earlier generation. Without people who preserve and share material like this, an important part of martial arts history can easily disappear. Thank you, John Snyder Sensei, for helping preserve Odo Sensei's legacy and making this footage available to the martial arts community. 🥋 Odo Seikichi — Passai Kata Okinawa Kenpo If you enjoy historical footage of Okinawan Karate, Okinawa Kenpo, kata, kobudo, bunkai, and traditional martial arts, please LIKE, COMMENT, SHARE, and SUBSCRIBE.
