Why do so many UK lorry drivers avoid motorway services at night? I follow one night on the road, hour by hour, from the mid-afternoon parking gamble to first light. At each stage I set the official figures on lorry parking, prices, facilities and security alongside what drivers actually report. The result explains why the truck stop is full by seven and the lay-by is busy at midnight, and what that means for the people moving everything we buy.
In this video:
Why a driver's overnight stop is decided hours before he parks
The parking gap: the Department for Transport's count of around 4,500 missing spaces against the Road Haulage Association's 11,000
Why on-site lorry parking in England was 83% full, with 95% in the East of England
The real choice drivers face: motorway services, truck stop, lay-by or industrial estate
The £15 lay-by payment, and the arithmetic that makes it tempting
Why truck stops score 95% satisfaction and motorway services 82%
Food prices, security and why a legal rest isn't always a real sleep
What government grants and the big operators are doing, and what would actually fix it

The £15 lay-by payment and the £30 parking fee come from one driver's testimony in research for Transport Focus. They are used as illustrative figures, not national averages. Annual totals and worked examples are my own calculations, shown so you can check them. Satisfaction scores describe surveyed sites during the survey period, not any individual service area today.

If this explained why the lorry park is full and the lay-by is busy, a like helps it reach the next person wondering the same thing. Subscribe for the next video, where I'll compare the government's new 2026 lorry parking survey with 2022 and show whether the gap has closed or grown.
