A terrace above a city that has gone to bed — ancient Greek ambient music for sleep, study and reading. A terrace above a city that has gone to bed. The Greeks and Romans built to catch exactly this: a colonnade high on a hill, open on one side, positioned so that whoever stood there saw the whole harbour at once. Vitruvius is fussy about the orientation of rooms for this reason — where the light comes from, what you see when you look up from what you are doing. The view was not decoration. It was the point of the architecture. So here is the view, for an hour. A brazier burning down on the stone. Ships anchored in the bay. Ten thousand lamps in the town below, and nobody awake to look at them but you. Fourteen original instrumentals for reed flute and soft harp, with a low drone underneath and no percussion at all. The flute leads; a lyre surfaces now and then, one note at a time, and is gone again. For sleep, reading, or working late. 00:00 The Terrace I 02:37 The Terrace II 05:40 The Terrace III 08:27 The Terrace IV 11:10 The Terrace V 14:03 The Terrace VI 16:57 The Terrace VII 19:31 The Terrace VIII 22:17 The Terrace IX 24:45 The Terrace X 27:49 The Terrace XI 31:07 The Terrace XII 34:19 The Terrace XIII 36:56 The Terrace XIV 39:10 The Terrace I 41:47 The Terrace II 44:51 The Terrace III 47:38 The Terrace IV 50:21 The Terrace V 53:14 The Terrace VI 56:08 The Terrace VII 58:41 The Terrace VIII A note on the pictures: no photograph of this world survives. Every scene here is a reconstruction — built from written descriptions, excavation plans and what fragments remain, then painted. Where the record runs out we have guessed, and tried to guess carefully. Every frame and every note in this video was made for it — no stock footage, no library music, no third-party tracks. Visuals are original digital paintings; the motion is rendered from the still by our own code, not filmed. Music is original instrumental composition, made for this video with AI tools under our direction and licensed to us in perpetuity for commercial use. Nothing here is stock or taken from a music library. If a track resonates with you, tell us in the comments which one and we will build the next hour around it.
