WABC 77 New York - Chuck Leonard - April 2 1979 - Radio Aircheck This aircheck features Chuck Leonard, during his final year at 77 WABC. Chuck Leonard was a trailblazing radio personality whose voice and style helped shape New York City radio from the 1960s through the 1990s. A native of Illinois and a graduate of the University of Illinois, Leonard made history in 1965 when he became the first African American DJ hired for a full-time, prime-time shift on a major Top 40 station—WABC 77 AM, coming over from R&B WWRL. His smooth delivery, upbeat presence, and deep connection with his audience made him a standout during the golden age of AM radio. From spinning hits to reading the news with flair, Leonard was more than just a DJ—he was a trusted voice in the homes and cars of millions across the city. As FM radio gained popularity, Leonard transitioned smoothly to stations like WXLO (99X), WRKS (98.7 Kiss-FM), and WJUX, showing his versatility across formats—from R&B and soul to adult contemporary, nostalgia and Top 40. Known for his professionalism, warm personality, and unmistakable voice, Leonard inspired a generation of broadcasters and helped open doors for African Americans in mainstream radio.
