This one is for the first night somewhere new: a hotel room, a friend's spare bed, a new apartment, a partner's place. You're tired, the bed is fine, and still every door down the hall and every click of the heater pulls you back up.
There's a real reason for that, and it has a name: the first night effect.
When I'm in a hotel, the sound I've always liked is the air conditioner. That low, steady hum somehow makes a strange room feel okay. So I built this one around it. The challenge was making the noise dense enough to cover voices in the corridor and doors closing, without it turning hissy or white over twelve hours. I kept softening the top end until it felt warm, gave the noise a small room to live in so it sounds like it fills the space around you rather than sitting in your ears, and then made sure nothing in it ever changes. Change is exactly what a watchful brain listens for.
The screen fades to complete black so you can sleep without light in the room.

THE SOUND:
🤎 Brown noise as a warm, low floor, with a little extra bass
🩷 Pink noise as the main body of the sound
💚 A gentle lift through the range of the human voice, so corridor conversations, doors and TVs through the wall blur into the background
❄️ A low, steady air conditioner hum, round rather than buzzy, sitting quietly underneath
🚪 A touch of small-room reverb, so the sound fills the space around you
🌫️ Softened on top, so it stays smooth rather than hissy, even hours in
〰️ One blend from the first minute to the last. No music, no rain, and nothing that swells, shifts or fades

THE ISOCHRONIC LAYER:
The pulse is the only part of this soundscape that moves, and only for the first hour.
0:00 Settle (6 to 4 Hz)
A soft pulse in the drowsy theta range, easing slower over the first 25 minutes.
25:00 Descend (4 to 2.5 Hz)
The pulse keeps slowing, down into the delta range.
1:00:00 Hold (steady 2.5 Hz)
From here nothing changes, all the way to the end. If you wake at 3am, you wake into exactly what you fell asleep to, with nothing new for the night watch to catch.
The carrier tone sits at 100 Hz, mixed to be felt rather than heard.

WHAT IS THE FIRST NIGHT EFFECT?
In 2016, researchers at Brown University found that on the first night in a new place, the left side of the brain stays more alert than the right, keeping a kind of night watch. It responds more to irregular, unfamiliar sounds and wakes up faster when it hears one.
It's an old survival instinct, and it usually fades by the second night. This soundscape can't switch it off. It's designed to give that watchful part of you nothing unfamiliar to catch on: one steady, familiar sound covering the small noises of a new room.
━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━
WHAT ARE ISOCHRONIC TONES?
Isochronic tones are rhythmic pulses of sound played at a precise frequency. Heard consistently, the brain's own rhythms can begin to sync toward them, a process called entrainment.
They don't need headphones the way binaural beats do. The pulse lives in the sound itself, so speakers work just as well.
