The Lindenhof, a quiet tree-covered terrace on the left bank, is where the Romans built their customs post — today it's a gravel square full of chess players and falling leaves, with the best free view in the city. Across the water, the Grossmünster's twin towers have marked the skyline since the twelfth century.
