Starting under the Semba Center Building just after six, the route heads north through Semba — the merchant grid laid out in the seventeenth century, its wholesalers shuttered for the weekend — and up Midosuji under the ginkgo trees. At Yodoyabashi the city opens onto water: Nakanoshima, the sandbar Osaka's merchants built four hundred years ago, with the red-brick Central Public Hall of 1918 floodlit at its eastern end against the last of the light. From there it runs west along the Dojima River, under the elevated expressway, and comes up at Watanabebashi. Kitashinchi begins a block later, lanterns coming on in narrow lanes, and the walk ends up on the decks above Osaka Station as a Saturday night gets going. For anyone short on time.
