This dance-drama narrates the story of Neeli, a young girl whose desire for education was denied because of circumstances beyond her control. Her aspirations to read, learn, and acquire knowledge were suppressed by the social inequalities of her time, particularly the discrimination she faced because of her caste and gender. According to the story, Neeli was later captured by upper-caste Brahmin men, or Nambhoodiris, and was killed on accusations of “misconduct.” It is believed that after her death, Neeli transformed into Goddess Neeliyar Bhagavathi, who is now worshipped by the people of Mangattuparambu. Through this dance-drama, I attempt to bring Neeli’s story to the forefront while exploring the history, cultural significance, and emergence of a new form of Theyyam in northern Kerala. #longvideo #theyyamdance #dance Inspired from ‪@meenakshimmenon_‬
