What happens if you never fart, not once, ever again? Your gut has two ways to try it, and both go wrong. We look at what happens if you hold in a fart, using a real experiment where volunteers were told not to. What are farts made of? Mostly nitrogen, plus gases made by about 38 trillion gut bacteria, with a tiny trace of sulfur for the smell. Why do we fart at all? Because those bacteria turn the fibre you can't digest into fuel, and gas is the exhaust. Along the way: where trapped gas goes, why some of it leaves on your breath, and what germ-free animals reveal about life without gut microbes.
