A 30-minute continuous real-time field recording of ocean surf on a Far East Gippsland beach, with no music or narration. The film quietly mirrors the practice of meditation. Often, when we settle into a period of silent sitting, the turbulence of the mind is overwhelming. In time, with persistence and attention to the breath, the turbulence subsides. Return to the breath. Awareness itself is not moved. Then, once again, the turbulence arises, driven by currents and winds we are powerless to resist. Eventually, we realise we are drifting. Then we are no longer adrift. Return to the breath. Let awareness be the harbour. - - You stand still as soft peach-and-cream morning light settles over the sea as the water rolls in long, repeating rhythms onto the shore. The ocean is quieter than usual, though never still: foamy washes, shifting currents and occasional heavier waves preserve the underlying power and weight of this wild coast. The soundscape is shaped by the to and fro of surf, shifting currents, foamy wash and deeper waves dumping further out. Beneath the surface calm, the movement of the sea remains constant: pulled by unseen forces, folding and returning again and again. Recorded on location, this film presents the complete 30-minute real-time observation.
