Bare Metal to Show Car: 3 Build Stages at Hawks Speed Shop | GTO, Camaro & Chevelle

I had the opportunity to meet with hot rod builder James Cartwright, owner of Hawks Speed Shop & Garage in Manchester, Tennessee, at the Triple Crown of Rodding. During my visit I had the pleasure of meeting Jame's wife and co-owner of the shop, Jamie Cartwright along with some of the team members. Hawk's Speed Shop had one of the most impressive booths at the Triple Crown of Rodding showcasing three outstanding vehicles in different stages of restoration giving us an opportunity to see three important stages of the custom-car building process—from fabrication and fresh paint to a completely finished show car. First our attention is instantly drawn to a beautifully completed Chevrolet Chevelle. From its finished body and paint to the carefully selected details throughout the car, the Chevelle demonstrates what the Hawks Speed Shop team can produce when a full custom build reaches completion. Next we take a closer look at a Pontiac GTO that is still in the metal-fabrication stage. With much of the vehicle exposed, James walks us through the metal work and wiring and explains the amount of planning, fabrication and attention to detail that goes into creating a high-quality build before the bodywork and paint can begin. The final vehicle is a Chevrolet Camaro that had only recently come out of the paint booth. This gives us a great look at the transformation that happens once months of preparation, bodywork and finishing finally come together in fresh paint. James also shares more about the shop, its talented team and the work involved in turning customers’ ideas into finished cars and trucks.
