Step up the gangway, bootleggers. Today on Whispers in the Walls, I am taking you aboard an 81,000-ton floating labyrinth of steel where high-society royalty once sipped champagne by night, and wartime horrors turned the bowels of the ship into an inescapable iron tomb: The RMS Queen Mary.
Long before she was permanently moored in Long Beach, California, as one of the most notoriously haunted landmarks in the world, she was "Hull Number 534"—a symbol of industrial triumph built during the crushing depths of the Great Depression. Stripped down for World War II, painted in camouflage, and rechristened "The Grey Ghost," she broke maritime records carrying over 16,000 troops at a time through boiling seas and rogue waves under a direct bounty from Adolf Hitler.
Then, on a gray October afternoon in 1942, her ironclad orders never to stop for anything collided with catastrophe—slicing her own Royal Navy escort, the HMS Curacoa, cleanly in two and leaving 338 men behind in the freezing Atlantic.
Join me as I explore the history, the human tragedy, and the lingering energy etched into her bulkheads:
•
🍸 Pick Your Poison: Pouring a classic 1930s Sidecar to capture the golden age of transatlantic Art Deco luxury.
•
🚢 The Floating Palace: The John Brown & Co. shipyards, rare exotic hardwoods, and the glory years of the Verandah Grill and Cabin Class dining salon.
•
⚔️ The Grey Ghost: Blackout conditions, 120-degree lower decks, and a near-capsizing 52-degree roll in a 90-foot rogue wave.
•
🌊 The Sinking of the HMS Curacoa: The collision off the Irish coast, the detonation of live depth charges, and the devastating silence of the aftermath.
•
👻 The Permanent Residents: The violent disturbances of Stateroom B340, phantom splashes in the drained First Class pool, Winston Churchill’s cigar smoke in Suite M61, and the tragic spirit of 18-year-old John Pedder by watertight Door 13.
•
2.0 oz Cognac (or quality French brandy)
•
0.75 oz Cointreau (or dry orange curaçao)
•
0.75 oz Fresh squeezed lemon juice
•
Garnish: Superfine sugar rim & a lemon twist
Preparation:
Rim half a chilled coupe glass with a lemon wedge and dip into superfine sugar. Add the Cognac, Cointreau, and fresh lemon juice to a cocktail shaker packed with ice. Shake vigorously for 20 seconds until frosty. Double-strain into your prepared glass. Bright, citrus-forward, and packing a classic punch.
