One of the most underated albums of its generation. When asked what made it for them (The Goa Trance scene) they will usually say Twisted or Trust in Trust. In addition to the latter, for me it was Tsuyoshi Suzuki's highly inventive and mystical Shamanic Trance. If you have not yet heard of this watershed in music history, gather round. In classical music we would call this album 'programmatic music' - it tells a story. Starting off with a prodigious exposition of techno imagination, the story proceeds through a series of ghostly visions. The tempo is upbeat and the hero is fresh with purpose. But then he begins to doubt his cause. Perhaps he suspects the dosage he applied, so he drops another. Of course, there was nothing wrong with the initial dosage, now doubled, and around the half way point we slide into the thumper tracks. Vision upon vision descend, waves of consciousness progressively deepen before the gurgling chant of monks takes us into the final reprieve. Such sublime mixing and respect for the listener. Suzuki doesn't aim to surprise and excite you. No, he is not so presumptuous. Like simpletons trying to harvest wheat with a butter knife, most DJs will hack away wildly, without the slightest idea what is coming out of the speakers. If they would only LISTEN to their music. So much for them. Suzuki grafted this labor of love with tenderness and affection. He approaches, encircles, and when he is sure he has you in his grasp, he cuts. It is deftly done. There are no questions and no apologies. There is nothing that could be called whimsy or guessing. Every sample is placed with the precision of a samurai. After just one listening the wisdom of a thousand Buddhas is attained and the initiation is complete. Most trance albums couldn't make it five years down the line without substantial revision. This mythical masterpiece hasn't aged a day. ________ Companies, etc. Phonographic Copyright (p) – Volume Copyright (c) – Volume Distributed By – Vital Published By – Turning Shrinesongs Published By – Copyright Control Published By – Psy-Music Published By – Polygram Published By – G.W.
