Have you noticed how much uncertainty we are living with? We are told what to fear, what to buy, what to believe, and why we had better hurry up and do something about it. In this solo episode, Debra Morrison draws on 47 years of working with women and their money to make a case for agency. Not the kind that requires you to predict the future, but the kind that comes from knowing how you will respond no matter what happens. She covers the information diet most of us never examine, and why letting strangers on a screen set the emotional temperature of your morning is a choice you can take back. She looks at research on decision making under stress, including a meta analysis of 32 datasets and roughly 1,800 participants, which found stress can push us toward riskier and sometimes poorer decisions. Which means the moment you are most desperate to feel safe may be the worst moment to decide anything. Then she turns to something money cannot fix. According to the CDC, about one in three American adults reports feeling lonely, and about one in four reports not having adequate social and emotional support. The U.S. Surgeon General’s advisory on social connection reported that lacking social connection can raise the risk of premature death to a degree comparable with smoking up to fifteen cigarettes a day. Debra’s point lands hard. We would never shrug at a friend who took up smoking a pack a day, yet we watch women quietly disappear and call it independence. She shares what Kilimanjaro taught her about when to lead and when to follow, why “I’m fine” can be two of the most expensive words a woman says, and why procrastination is never free. Researchers define it as voluntarily delaying an action while expecting to be worse off for the delay. We know waiting will cost us. We wait anyway. Finally she brings it to money, where women most often confuse uncertainty with helplessness. You cannot know what the market does next Tuesday. You can know what you own and why you own it. You can know where you stand. Your challenge this week takes 24 hours. Choose one thing you have been postponing and move it into action, because action produces information, information produces clarity, clarity gives you choices, and choices restore agency.
