Uboa / Impossible Light - Philippe Grandrieux / Unrest Trilogy - Mediums of "Kinetic" Art

Uboa is the musical project of Australian-based Xandra Metcalfe; she creates music that transcends the limitations of traditional musical structure through genre experimentation. Her most recent studio album is titled 'Impossible Light' and expands upon themes of transgender identity, mental health, and grief that prominelty featured in her 2019 release, 'The Origin of My Depression'. The deep personal identity of the work combined with its unrelenting emotional impact generates a "kinetic" artistic identity akin to that of experimental filmmaker Philippe Grandrieux. Grandrieux's non-narrative "Unrest" trilogy is composed of three films, White Epilespy, Murderess (Meurtrière), and Unrest. I compare the trilogy to the album and talk about their respective stylistic flair in the context of the term "kinetic art".
