The Story Behind My ‘Teenage Minds’ Album

Teenage Minds is finally out! After several years, multiple rewrites, re-recordings, remixes, and probably way too many hours of staring at tiny EQ curves😅 The first version of this album came out in 2021. It was my first serious attempt at writing, recording, mixing, and mastering an entire album completely by myself. At the time, I didn’t really have the equipment or the skills to make it sound the way I wanted, but I released it anyway. A few years and several EPs later, I felt like the album no longer represented where I was as a musician. I still loved the songs, but I knew they could be better. So I decided to completely rework Teenage Minds. I rewrote and fixed the lyrics, changed most of the arrangements, re-recorded the vocals, and mixed the entire album again… and then again. The biggest change was probably the sound. The original version was influenced by things like cloud rap, emo rap, bedroom pop, and indie music, partly because I simply didn’t have the instruments or equipment to make the rock music I actually wanted to make. This time, I was finally able to bring the album closer to the alternative rock, pop-punk, and indie rock sound I had originally imagined. The album is called Teenage Minds because these songs are basically a collection of thoughts, emotions, and experiences from my teenage years but revisited from the perspective of someone who’s now a little older. Some of these songs still feel very relevant to me. Others feel a little naive now. Some have even taken on completely different meanings over time. The album is mostly about love in its different forms, but also grief, loneliness, growing up, letting people go, regret, fear of the future, and trying to understand yourself.
