Skill Level: *
It’s an easy, beginner-friendly pattern, made with chains and one type of stitch, with perfectly monotone repeated rows. It can be made in a relatively short time.
Here are the abbreviations (US):
ch: chain
turn: Flip the whole project over so the back side faces you, then in the next row skip the turning chain and place your first stitch into the very first stitch (and that’s the next row’s first stitch).
hdc: half-double crochet
st: stitch
(number): The stitch count at the end of a row.
sl st: slip stitch
Materials:
3/Light Weight Yarn – white
(I recommend Schachenmayr Bravo Original 08200 ecru / Drops Cotton Light Uni Colour 01 / Drops Flora Uni Colour 01 / Durable Soqs 326 Ivory)
3.00 mm hook
(I used my yarn-recommended hook size.)
scissors
tapestry needle
two different coloured stitch markers
tailor’s tape measure
Measurements: the circumference is 56 centimetres
In this video tutorial, I make a 56 cm headband, so the pattern is specific to this headband. Even if you use the same materials and hook size, you won’t necessarily get the same size, because it also depends on your tension.
To create a custom size, first of all, measure your head circumference with a tailor’s tape. Wrap the tape around your head, passing just above your ears and across the middle of your forehead, so basically where you would wear the headband. Keep it snug, read the number in centimetres or inches, and write it down, because you will use it to gauge the size of your own headband.
When you do the foundation chain, compare it to the tailor’s tape with your own measurement. I recommend measuring your foundation chain while you are stretching it. This method makes sure the headband won’t be too large.
Then the pattern is easy because with stitch markers you don’t need to count your stitches. Work one half double crochet in each stitch, and chain 1 at the end of the row to turn.
The final width also depends on your preference. I crocheted 11 rows, but you can easily add or subtract rows to customise the width. Note that 11 rows is relatively narrow. (However, 11 rows is on the smaller side. If your measurements are similar, I don't recommend doing fewer rows than this.)
With those tips in mind, you can now create your own custom-sized headband! The video will show you how to finish the last row, join the fabric, and weave in the ends. Check out the timestamps below to skip directly to the section you need.
