The Cathedral of Saint Stephen in Meaux, begun in the 12th century and completed in the 16th, is one of the finest examples of Gothic architecture in the Île-de-France region. Despite four centuries of construction, the building remains remarkably harmonious. Its asymmetrical façade, marked by a temporary bell tower that became permanent, reflects the vicissitudes of its history. Inside, light abounds: the five-aisled nave, the ornate transept, and especially the choir, rebuilt with great finesse, create an impression of soaring heights. The ambulatory leads to five radiating chapels, typical of Gothic architecture, which fan out around the apse. The cathedral also houses the tomb of Bossuet, the famous Bishop of Meaux and a major figure of the 17th century. Between its sculptures, stained glass windows, and chapels, the Cathedral of Saint Stephen in Meaux surprises, moves, and recounts nine centuries of history.
