10 million copies of MS-DOS 6.0 had sold by early 1994, and the last DOS Microsoft ever sold on its own came out of a courtroom. This is how a patent verdict produced MS-DOS 6.22.
MS-DOS 6.0 arrived in March 1993 with MemMaker, Defrag and DoubleSpace, which made a 40 MB drive hold nearly 80. Stac Electronics, the small Carlsbad company behind Stacker, had already sued. On 23 February 1994 a Los Angeles jury awarded Stac $120 million, and by June a judge had ordered unsold copies of MS-DOS 6.0 and 6.2 recalled.
In this documentary:
1. Why Microsoft rewrote its disk compression weeks before MS-DOS 6.0 shipped
2. How MS-DOS 6.21 became a release with a feature taken out
3. What DriveSpace in MS-DOS 6.22 changed, and what it could not read
4. Why the settlement paid Stac the monthly sum it had once refused
5. How Stacker lost its market after winning in court
If your office PC said Starting MS-DOS every morning over a doubled drive, you probably remember typing MemMaker. Share what you remember below.
What remains: DriveSpace shipped inside Windows 95, and Stac stopped selling Stacker in September 1997.
