His Lawyer Wanted Him To Plead Guilty To Something He Didn't Do

In Chapter 13 of The Crazy Train ("Pins And Needles"), the Judds prepare for trial while growing increasingly uncertain about whether the justice system is actually searching for the truth. After reviewing the police report, Hannah and Phontaine begin meeting with lawyers in hopes of finding someone willing to seriously investigate what happened at the park. They are financially destitute and have only had public defenders represent them up to this point. One attorney warns them that their situation sounds like his “worst nightmare” and urges them to hire a real defense lawyer immediately—regardless of the cost. Meanwhile, Caleb’s charges are quietly dropped, the family drains nearly all of its remaining money on legal fees, and the Judds continue trying to understand the mysterious “law” police officers claimed allowed their teenage daughter to live wherever she wanted without parental permission. Then new evidence emerges. During a legal deposition, Tia admits Jerry Glass disliked the Judds’ Mormon religion, alcohol was present in the Glass home, expensive gifts had been offered to encourage her to stay, and Officer Patterson had told her minors over age 12 could live wherever they wanted. At the same time, the Judds begin realizing the video footage they believed would completely clear them may not be as simple as they hoped. Without context, parts of the footage appear chaotic and alarming—even to church leaders they trust. As life slowly stabilizes financially, new concerns continue piling up: troubling behavior from doctors, ongoing pressure from former church leaders, uncertainty surrounding Tia’s emotional state, and warnings about grooming and sex trafficking that strongly resemble what the family had already experienced. Then Hannah publicly confronts a police officer during a community trafficking prevention seminar, challenging claims that law enforcement always helps return missing children home. The response she receives only deepens the family’s confusion. As the trial date finally approaches, the Judds revisit the police report one more time and begin asking an increasingly disturbing question: What if the inaccuracies weren’t accidental?
