The A50 Gen 5 is one of the most convenient premium wireless gaming headsets you can put on a multi-system desk—but that doesn't automatically make it worth the price.
In this Astro A50 Gen 5 review, I break down who this headset actually makes sense for, what you're really paying for, and the limitations that could make a cheaper gaming headset the smarter purchase.
The biggest reason to buy the A50 Gen 5 isn't necessarily its sound quality. It's the base station.
If you regularly switch between multiple gaming systems, the A50 lets you move your wireless audio between supported devices without constantly unplugging dongles, reaching behind your PC, or pairing the headset again.
But there are some important catches.
The regular A50 Gen 5 doesn't provide the same HDMI video switching functionality as the more expensive A50X, Bluetooth depends on the base station, and this isn't really designed to be a portable everyday Bluetooth headset.
The open-back design also means there is no active noise cancellation, and your surroundings can affect how well you hear quieter details in games.
I also cover:
• Multi-system switching
• PC, Xbox and PlayStation use
• Game/chat balance limitations
• 40mm PRO-G graphene drivers
• Positional gaming audio
• Flip-to-mute microphone quality
• Comfort for long gaming sessions
• Build quality
• Bluetooth limitations
• Open-back sound
• Battery life
• Magnetic dock charging
• Astro A50 Gen 5 vs A50X differences
• Who should—and shouldn't—buy it
So, is the Astro A50 Gen 5 worth $300?
