Charles Dickens - From Workhouse to Literary Legend Documentary

Charles Dickens, the Victorian novelist, in a documentary on his life from the blacking factory to Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol and Great Expectations. At twelve, with his father held in the Marshalsea debtors' prison, Charles Dickens was sent to work in a London blacking warehouse. Born in Portsmouth in 1812, he drew on that hardship in the novels that made him one of the most popular writers of Victorian England. The documentary traces his rise from journalism and The Pickwick Papers to Oliver Twist, A Christmas Carol, David Copperfield, Bleak House and Great Expectations, along with his public readings, his separation from Catherine Hogarth and his relationship with Ellen Ternan. He died at Gad's Hill Place in 1870 and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
