From the pass, the road descends through winding curves toward the deep blue waters of one of Tibet’s most iconic sacred lakes. Yamdrok Lake is not a simple open lake. From above, it stretches through the mountains with many branches, bays, and winding shorelines. As the road follows the lake, the view keeps changing — sometimes like driving beside a river, sometimes beside a sea, and sometimes beside a narrow blue line hidden between the mountains. Along the route, the drive passes highland pastures, Tibetan villages, open grasslands, quiet lake bays, and mountain curves. Yaks, sheep, horses, and sometimes eagles can be seen along the way, creating a slow and immersive journey through the landscape of the Tibetan Plateau. The destination is Rituo Monastery, a small monastery standing on a narrow peninsula beside Yamdrok Lake. Surrounded by water, mountains, and open sky, it is often called one of the loneliest monasteries in the world.
