Held for L. Not to be catalogued again. A small black key opens the third cabinet in the library of Haus Eberhain. Inside is a ledger with a split spine, open to an inventory dated 14 February 1943. Six Dutch landscapes. A silver-gilt reliquary. And one more line: a painting by Ruth Lewin, a German-Jewish artist presumed murdered in the Holocaust. Beside it, in a colder ink, someone has written: "Held for L. Not to be catalogued again." The painting appears in no inventory since. Clara's father always said it was never here. Then the dealer's receipts from Cologne, 1941: a carbon copy marked "Crated H 417", a sum written down but never received, and a covering letter offering works "now without owners in a position to object." And in Clara's funeral coat, the envelope from the woman in the navy hat: a pressed fern and a brass luggage token stamped 417. At noon, Gabriel Laurent van der Meer arrives with a photograph from Strasbourg, 1938. A woman where three rivers meet, holding an empty frame. A little girl below her, blurred because she moved. "She lived under a Dutch name. Her parents did not." And in The Hague, three hundred years earlier, Éléonore walks into a house on the canal where women play cards and no one may be kept. The rule at the door is simple: coin clears, a body is not rent, anyone may leave. In this episode: The 1943 inventory and the note "Held for L" Kessler's receipts: recorded, not received A luggage token stamped 417 Gabriel's photograph and the family the painting was taken from The half-sheet found at two in the morning: "L. collected the small case. The large stays." Anke's house on the canal, where a debt can finally be paid and finished Questions of the episode: Who is L, and why was the painting held and not sold? What did Clara's mother know, and why did she stop asking in 2017? Why does paying a debt feel like freedom to a woman who owes everything at home?
