Early on July 3, 1971, Pamela Courson found Jim Morrison dead in the bathtub of their Paris apartment. Under a will he'd signed more than two years earlier, everything he owned was supposed to go to her. The story everyone knows is that a drunken concert in Miami broke him, the trial wore him down, and Paris was a rest that came too late. He was leaving. Halfway through the Miami trial, facing jail, he wrote in his notebook that the joy of performing had ended.
Months later he finished the last album he owed his record label, and he was living in Paris before it came out. The will also said that if Pamela didn't outlive him, everything would go to his brother and sister instead. She outlived him. Those two still ended up owning half of what he left. It started in Miami. But before Miami came a fight over a Buick commercial, the first time he said no to the rest of the band and won.
