I am Rochelle thirty four years old and until last week I thought my marriage was simply struggling not entirely staged. On our seventh wedding anniversary my husband raised his glass in front of forty guests and said cheers to the biggest mistake of my life. His entire family laughed. I put down my fork and told him he would wish he had not said that. He just smirked and told the crowd to listen to the freeloader making threats. Five days later I sat in my office staring at one hundred and fifty two missed calls and a single text from him begging me to undo what I had done.
Before I share exactly how I dismantled his entire life let me know where you are watching from in the comments below. Hit that like button and subscribe if you have ever had to destroy the very people who underestimated your power.
The evening started at one of the most exclusive five star restaurants in Buckhead Atlanta. The private dining room was dripping in crystal chandeliers and arranged with massive centerpieces of white roses. DeAndre my husband of seven years had booked the space to celebrate our anniversary. At thirty six he was the Director of Acquisitions at a luxury real estate firm and his ego entered every room long before he did. He was obsessed with the concept of Black Excellence and spent every waking moment trying to project an image of flawless wealth. Surrounding us at the long mahogany table were forty of our so called closest friends elite real estate partners and his incredibly toxic family.
To them I was nothing but a charity case. I presented myself as a freelance content consultant who worked in sweatpants from our penthouse. I never wore flashy designer brands or bragged about my income. DeAndre firmly believed he was the sole provider funding my modest lifestyle and allowing me to live in his world. His parents Elias and Vivian treated me with barely disguised contempt. Vivian was a mega church socialite who thought her son was a king and Elias followed her every command. Then there was DeAndre's sister Jasmine and her husband Bradley. Bradley was a white man who constantly bragged about his old money Southern heritage dropping backhanded compliments and microaggressions all night. He loved to say DeAndre was one of the good ones while looking at me like I was something he scraped off his shoe.
Dinner was a lavish affair of expensive steaks and imported wine that I knew DeAndre could not actually afford on his salary. He was drowning in leveraged debt but maintaining the illusion was more important to him than reality. As the dessert plates were cleared DeAndre stood up and tapped his silver spoon against his champagne flute. The gentle clinking sound brought a hush over the room. I looked up at him expecting the usual performative speech about how my quiet support helped him conquer the corporate world. Instead I noticed the wicked gleam in his eye. I glanced across the table and saw Jasmine pulling out her phone to record while Bradley leaned back with a nasty grin.
DeAndre cleared his throat adjusting his tailored suit jacket. Seven years ago I stood at an altar and made a choice he began his voice echoing in the silent room.
