Griffs Magic Theatre 9th September 2026

This week, Griff’s Magic Theatre puts on a pair of cheap sunglasses and sets off with absolutely no regard for musical boundaries. We begin with the magnificent swagger of ZZ Top and Bad Company, then rummage through Wings’ medicine cabinet before encountering Frank Zappa’s slime and Black Sabbath’s suspiciously fragrant houseplant. From there, the route becomes even less predictable, taking in psychedelia, folk, blues, jazz rock, British beat and a white bicycle that almost certainly shouldn’t be ridden after listening to the first half of the programme. Along the way, there are two visits each from The Yardbirds and The Zombies, some beautifully delicate moments from Pentangle and The Rascals, and considerably less delicate moments courtesy of Jeff Beck, John Mayall and Brian Auger. Finally, Back Street Crawler arrive to remind us that whatever else happens, the band plays on. Twenty records, several changes of musical direction and not a satnav in sight.
