Avoid the Circle of Doom — Stop Overthinking Your Snooker
How much are you actually thinking about when you're down on a shot?
Grip… stance… head position… elbow… backswing… waggles… pause… cue action…
The problem is, your attention is limited. So the more technical thoughts you have running through your head, the less attention you have available for the thing that actually matters — playing the shot.
In this video, I explain why I believe players should simplify their thinking and focus their attention on three things:
🎯 Where you're striking the cue ball
📐 The line you want the cue ball to travel
⚡ The pace required
I also look at the science behind this, including Nelson Cowan's research into the limited capacity of working memory and the famous Invisible Gorilla experiment, which demonstrates just how easily our attention can be occupied by one task while we miss something happening right in front of us.
And importantly, my coaching isn't based on my opinion or simply what I happen to believe works. I'm trying to explain what actually happens and how the game is done — based on physics, biomechanics, motor learning and years of playing and coaching at the highest level.
The goal isn't to give you more things to think about.
It's to give you fewer.
One slightly embarrassing admission… 😂
I completely forgot to record an intro and outro when I made the video the day before. So the opening and closing sections were filmed the following day during a practice session with Joe O'Connor at his base in Leicester.
Thankfully, Joe didn't seem to mind me interrupting the practice session to sort out my YouTube mistake!
If you enjoy the video, like, subscribe and let me know in the comments what you find yourself thinking about when you're down on a shot.
