Internationally acclaimed cellist Arlen Hlusko’s newest album, komorebi, presents a reflection on Bach’s deeply moving Suite No. 5, juxtaposed with a myriad of contemporary American voices. Recorded at Tippet Rise Art Center, the album highlights the richness and power of community and storytelling. Composed by Dawn Avery and commissioned by Tippet Rise, Àkweks Katye (The Eagle Flies), tells a musical story of an eagle from the perspective of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois), and the belief passed down from Avery’s Haudenosaunee elders that this majestic creature – the àkweks – carries our spirit “from the stars into the waters” at birth, and eventually back to the Sky world. The full-length music video filmed at the art center accompanies the track.
