In 1905, sixty-five thousand people came to a ranch in northern Oklahoma to watch Geronimo shoot a buffalo from the front seat of an automobile. Twenty-seven years later, the same ranch was sold off at auction, piece by piece. This is the rise and fall of the Miller Brothers' 101 Ranch: 110,000 acres along the Salt Fork River, the largest diversified farm and ranch in America. It was the birthplace of bulldogging, and the Wild West show that played for the King and Queen of England. It was a training ground for Hollywood cowboys like Tom Mix, and partner in the oil strike that helped create Conoco. And then, in less than four years, it lost everything. In this documentary: • How a Kentucky Confederate veteran built a cattle empire on leased Ponca land • The 1905 "Gala Day" with Geronimo, 65,000 spectators and a quarter-mile grandstand • Bill Pickett, the Black cowboy who invented steer wrestling • The 101 Ranch Real Wild West, Tom Mix, Bison 101 and the birth of the movie Western • E.W. Marland, the Willie Cries for War well, and the oil boom of Ponca City • Two brothers dead in fifteen months, the Crash, and a receivership that began on the same date as the Cherokee Strip Land Run Images and scenes in this video are artistic recreations made for storytelling and are not historical photographs. 🔔 Subscribe to Old America Untold for long-form documentaries about the American stories they left out of the history books. #101Ranch #OklahomaHistory #OldWest
