Donna Adelson was found guilty of first-degree murder, conspiracy and solicitation in the 2014 murder of her former son-in-law, Florida State University law professor Dan Markel, and was sentenced to life in prison without parole plus 30 years on October 13, 2025. She maintains her innocence and her appeal is pending. He had been in a long custody dispute with his ex-wife, Wendi Adelson, over their two sons. Over the following years, five people were convicted: Luis Rivera (pleaded guilty and testified, 19 years), Sigfredo Garcia (the gunman, life), Katherine Magbanua (life), Wendi's brother Charlie Adelson (convicted November 6, 2023, life) and their mother Donna Adelson (convicted September 4, 2025, life without parole plus 30 years). In 2016 the FBI staged an approach by an undercover officer to see whom the family would call. A week after her son's conviction, Donna Adelson was arrested at Miami International Airport with a one-way ticket to Vietnam; her defense said the trip was not an escape. Harvey Adelson and Wendi Adelson have not been charged and deny any involvement. Donna Adelson's own statements are shown as her account.
