Did the Hawks get better after Jan 6th? We got "tougher"? Why didn't it translate in the playoffs?

Someone posted on the innanet that the Atlanta Hawks were improved after the January 6th trade of Trae Young and team was tougher. If this is true, why didn't the Hawks win more than 6 games from the year before? Why didn't the Hawks have a better showing in the playoffs?
