How can a machine heavier than the air it displaces fly? Follow an original unbranded airplane through relative flow, wing geometry, distributed pressure forces, momentum exchange, lift coefficients, controlled force balances and a glider comparison.
Flow paths and pressure patches are explanatory drawings, not CFD or wind-tunnel measurements. Numerical density, speed, area, coefficient, mass and force values are selected arithmetic examples, not aircraft specifications, performance forecasts or operating instructions. Constant-coefficient comparisons apply only to the stated models. No universal stall angle or speed is supplied.
Chapters
00 A heavier machine can exchange momentum with air
13 Four forces are not four engines
29 Airspeed is relative motion
44 The wing is a three-dimensional object
56 Pressure acts around the complete surface
15 Turning the air and pressure describe the same interaction
30 The two air markers have no meeting appointment
45 A symmetric section can still have an incidence
03 Angle of attack is an angle to the flow
20 The coefficient contains missing details
40 Doubling speed is a conditional comparison
57 Area changes the reference account
12 Weight and lift must be compared under stated motion
28 Thrust supplies motion and balances drag in the model
49 A glider spends height while traveling
05 Real flow can separate
24 A finite wing changes the surrounding flow
39 Flight is a coupled system, not an air-path trick
