One of the most remarkable aspects of the theory of evolution is that almost everyone believes they understand it. Yet the reality is quite the opposite: the simpler a person thinks evolution is, the more likely they are to misunderstand it. And this misconception is shared equally by both supporters and critics of the theory. Discussions about evolution usually revolve around the debate of chance versus design. The central question is often framed as: Is life an accident or a plan? Did the diverse forms of living organisms emerge by pure coincidence, like shapes that appear in the clouds? Or were they designed, like cars manufactured in a factory? But this entire debate starts from a false premise. The truth is that the astonishing diversity of life produced through evolution is neither a miracle of chance nor a product of design.
