In the first episode of I Read रामायणम्, we went back to the very beginning of the Valmiki Ramayanam, where Maharshi Valmiki asks Narada a fascinating question.
Is there a person who exists in the world right now who possesses all these extraordinary qualities? Someone who is truthful, courageous, grateful, self controlled, compassionate, powerful, wise, disciplined and capable of leading people?
Valmiki's curiosity is immense. And Narada answers him with one name.
Rama.
From that moment, Narada begins telling Valmiki about Rama. He begins describing who Rama was, what he looked like, what kind of qualities he possessed, how he conducted himself, and eventually gives Valmiki a condensed account of Rama's entire life.
That conversation is where this episode begins.
In Episode 2, we continue with the first Sarga of the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayanam. Narada first gives a remarkably detailed description of Rama's physical appearance. His face, eyes, shoulders, arms, chest, body structure, symmetry, strength and overall physical presence are described through a series of very specific Sanskrit expressions.
But the description does not stop with Rama's physical appearance.
Narada gradually moves from the body to the person behind it. He describes Rama's character, intelligence, self control, courage, knowledge, conduct, relationships, leadership and many other qualities that made him the person Valmiki was asking about.
And then something fascinating happens.
Narada starts giving Valmiki a condensed version of the entire Ramayana.
Within this single Sarga, he moves through Rama's birth and upbringing, his relationship with his father, his marriage to Sita, his exile, his journey into the forest with Sita and Lakshmana, the events that follow, Sita's abduction, Rama's search for her, his meeting with Sugriva and Hanuman, the search for Sita, the journey towards Lanka, the war with Ravana, the return to Ayodhya and Rama's rule.
It is almost as if Narada gives Valmiki the entire story first, in a highly compressed form.
There are also some beautiful smaller details in this summary that are easy to miss. Rama's relationship with the people around him, his interactions with sages, the way he responds to Jatayu, his relationship with Sugriva and others, his conversations while returning to Ayodhya, and even small details such as removing his matted hair after returning to Nandigrama are all preserved in this incredibly compressed account.
This is what makes this first Sarga so interesting to me. It is not simply a list of events. In just 100 verses, Narada introduces Valmiki to the man called Rama and gives him the framework of the entire Ramayana.
By the end of this conversation, Valmiki knows who Rama is, what kind of person he was, what happened in his life and what his story was.
And this is where the journey of I Read रामायणम् continues.
This episode, like Episode 1, follows the first Sarga of the Bala Kanda of the Valmiki Ramayanam and is based on the Sanskrit verses of the text.
SOURCES AND REFERENCES
The primary Sanskrit text used for the verses in this series is the Valmiki Ramayanam published by Ramayana Prakashana Samiti. The Sanskrit verses quoted and discussed in this episode are taken from this edition.
For translation, meaning and explanatory reference, I have also referred to the work of Ranganatha Sharma on the Valmiki Ramayanam.
The purpose of I Read रामायणम् is simple: read the original text, understand what it actually says, and explore what these ancient verses can tell us today.
