Christians believe that Jesus is God and the Saviour of mankind. But how did a first-century Jewish preacher come to be understood as God? In this video, I examine the development of the Christian understanding of Jesus using the Bible's own accounts. I begin with the original messianic expectation and examine what happened when Jesus was executed. If his followers had expected the Messiah to deliver Israel, how did they respond when their expected Messiah was killed? I then examine how his death was reinterpreted, how the resurrection belief fits into that development, and how the expectation of a future Second Coming eventually became part of the Christian message. Along the way, I address four common Christian apologetic arguments: • Did Jesus himself claim to be the Messiah and predict his suffering, death and resurrection? • Did the Old Testament actually prophesy a suffering, dying and resurrected Messiah? • Can the Christian interpretation be defended through the idea of “double fulfillment”? • Does the claim that the disciples were willing to die as martyrs prove that the resurrection really happened? The central question is not simply whether the Bible says that Jesus is God. The question is how and why that belief developed. This video presents a historical reconstruction of how the Christian understanding of Jesus developed from the expectations surrounding the Messiah to the belief in a risen Jesus and a future Second Coming.
