Switzerland was internationally recognized as a neutral state in 1815. It is also one of two countries that continue to play an active role today in the Neutral Nations Supervisory Commission, established under the 1953 Korean War Armistice Agreement.
From a position of neutrality, Swiss soldiers observed inter-Korean relations and captured them through their cameras. Today, those records have been brought back to life as art.
At the Swiss Pavilion of the 16th Gwangju Biennale, we take a closer look at this attempt to explore Switzerland’s “neutrality” and what it means today.
