Every regulation this series has covered ends up in the same document. Classification, new hazard classes, exposure scenarios and supply-chain information all have to be written into the safety data sheet correctly, for the right market and in the right language. And the requirements keep changing.
In Part 5 of our EU REACH Q&A series, Jana Eliášová and Yana Trubitsyna take questions on authoring, receiving and checking safety data sheets, submitted by registrants and asked live. Moderated by Stano Gajdoš.
Topics covered:
🔹 SDS basics: 16 sections under REACH Annex II as amended by Regulation 2020/878, and why the SDS is for professionals while the label is for consumers
🔹 New CLP hazard classes in the SDS: where ED, PBT/vPvB and PMT/vPvM show up (Sections 2, 3, 11 and 12), plus the 1 November 2026 deadline for substances and 1 May 2028 for mixtures
🔹 Where the CLP Omnibus stands after the European Parliament vote, and what it means for label font sizes
🔹 Where SDS data comes from: no obligation to test, what to do with available data, and dust explosion data in Section 9
🔹 Exposure scenarios: no mandatory format, when the tonnage and hazard triggers apply, substances vs mixtures, and what to do when your use isn’t covered
🔹 Where SDSs go wrong: classification and composition, communication up the supply chain, and confidential components in SDSs from outside the EU
🔹 SDSs you receive: when the label and the SDS disagree, how to check whether an SDS is current, concentration ranges in Section 3, and who is responsible for translation errors
🔹 Outside the EU: UK and Northern Ireland, the US, Turkey, Ukraine and the Western Balkans, and how to keep SDSs consistent across markets
🔹 UVCB substances in mixture classification, and why it’s case by case
