On the 12th of June 2020, American Airlines filed a routine document with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Inside it, the company told its investors that an outside appraiser valued AAdvantage — the frequent flyer programme — at between $19.5 and $31.5 billion.
That same week, the entire airline was worth under $10 billion on the stock market. Every aircraft, every gate, every route, every landing slot.
This is not a video about airlines being evil. It is about what happened to the number on the search page, and why the most profitable part of a major airline stopped being an operational business at all.
Everything here comes from documents the airlines filed themselves.

A NOTE ON THE NUMBERS
Several figures that circulate widely about this subject do not survive contact with the filings, and this video does not use them. United's $21.9 billion MileagePlus figure is United's own arithmetic, not an outside appraisal. No valuation of SkyMiles exists in any Delta filing. American's AAdvantage financing closed in March 2021, not 2020. And roughly 21% of a $200 nonstop round trip is tax and fees — not half.
Nothing here accuses any airline of doing anything unlawful. Current fee disclosure practice is lawful under the standard restored in July 2026.
