You're still turning the question over when another hand shoots up, and that's often where the signs you're a fast learner got read as slow.
Here are 10 of them, and the 2023 Carnegie Mellon study that shows why the classroom stopwatch missed them.
Maybe it was on a report card: "Needs to work on focus." "Asks off-topic questions." "Struggles with timed assessments." After enough years, you stop hearing those as comments and start hearing them as a description of you. And the label doesn't stay in the classroom. It's there when you let someone else learn the new system first, or nod along in a meeting instead of asking.
In 2023, a team led by Kenneth Koedinger at Carnegie Mellon studied nearly 7,000 students and counted every practice attempt, not just test scores. Students began at very different starting points, but once practice started, they improved at a remarkably similar rate. Those who started ahead needed about four good attempts to master a skill. Those who started behind needed about thirteen. Same engine, different starting line.
Seen that way, ten habits that got people marked down start to look different: needing the "why" before the rule (Michelene Chi, 1989), explaining through strange comparisons, doing worse with step-by-step instructions, remembering your mistakes in high definition, going blank on timed tests (Sian Beilock, 2005), learning by trying and failing, saying "wait, I'm lost" out loud, absorbing whatever sparks your curiosity, and understanding things best when you explain them to someone else.
The tenth sign is the one most people argue with, even after seeing the evidence. And there's a reason the video ends with a stopwatch.
Which of the ten signs hit closest, and which one did you spend years believing was a weakness? Tell us in the comments.
0:00 – Intro
3:48 – 1. You need the why first
4:50 – 2. You explain with strange comparisons
6:13 – 3. Step-by-step makes you worse
7:18 – 4. You'd rather try and fail
8:24 – 5. Your mistakes stay in HD
9:25 – 6. You go blank on timed tests
10:45 – 7. You're first to say I'm lost
11:43 – 8. Curiosity makes you absorb fast
13:00 – 9. You learn by explaining
14:02 – 10. You feel stupid more often
14:58 – The stopwatch was broken
