On March 3, 1974, Elvis Presley returned to the Houston Astrodome for his second appearance at the annual Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. Performing before one of the largest audiences of his career, Elvis faced an unusual challenge. Without the orchestra that had become an integral part of his stage presentations, he relied entirely on the TCB Band, The Sweet Inspirations, and J.D. Sumner and The Stamps Quartet to fill the enormous stadium. The result was a markedly different concert, stripped of much of the orchestral grandeur associated with his performances of the period and placing greater emphasis on the musicians and Elvis himself.
The absence of the orchestra brought a welcome immediacy to the familiar repertoire. “Trying to Get to You” receives a particularly committed reading, while “Johnny B. Goode” and “Polk Salad Annie” demonstrate the considerable strength of the band working without its usual accompaniment. Even established concert staples such as “Love Me Tender,” “I Can't Stop Loving You,” and “Suspicious Minds” benefit from the more direct arrangements. With the audience seated at a considerable distance from the stage, there was little opportunity for the customary personal interaction, resulting in a performance that remained unusually focused on the music.
The gospel selections provide some of the afternoon's most memorable moments. J.D. Sumner and The Stamps deliver a particularly effective “Why Me, Lord,” while “Help Me,” a recent Nashville recording, receives an intimate treatment without orchestral accompaniment. Most significant is “How Great Thou Art.” Its powerful performance, complete with an enthusiastic reprise, demonstrates that the musicians could achieve considerable dramatic impact without the familiar orchestral arrangements. “Let Me Be There” provides a lighter contrast before the concert moves toward its conclusion.
For this SRB Records release, the original soundboard recording has been newly remastered in stereo, offering a clearer appreciation of the individual musicians, backing vocalists, and the distinctive character of this performance. Near the conclusion, Elvis thanks the audience for attending despite the ongoing energy crisis and acknowledges the extraordinary size of the crowd, admitting that the occasion made him a little nervous. The concert stands as a compelling example of Elvis and his musicians working without the elaborate arrangements that usually surrounded them, demonstrating the strength of the musical foundation beneath the spectacle.
