Isabella Stewart Gardner was Boston's most daring and unconventional woman, and the creator of one of the world's most remarkable museums. But behind the glittering parties and priceless paintings was a story of grief, defiance, and a mystery that still hangs, quite literally, on the walls of her palace.
In this video, we look at her life, from her birth in New York City in 1840, to her marriage to Jack Gardner, the heartbreaking loss of her son, her travels across the world, and her friendships with John Singer Sargent, Henry James, and Bernard Berenson. We also explore how she built Fenway Court in 1903, and the famous 1990 theft of thirteen artworks, including a Vermeer and several Rembrandts, which remains unsolved to this day.
Which part of Isabella's story surprised you the most? Tell us in the comments below!
