Why do AI accusations keep hitting Black authors—and what evidence should publishers require before a writer’s career begins unraveling? After Jerry Falade’s debut novel reportedly inspired a fourteen-way auction and an offer exceeding $2 million, questions about AI use brought everything crashing down. According to Falade, within six hours he had been dropped by his agency, publishing deals were paused, and press releases were already going out. But Falade isn’t the only Black author caught in this controversy. In this video, we’re examining the different cases involving Jerry Falade, Mia Ballard and H.M. Wolfe—and the publishing industry’s inconsistent response to accusations of AI-generated writing. Let me be clear: I’m not defending novels written by AI. Readers deserve to know that the human being named on the cover actually wrote the book. But writers also deserve more than rumors, internet speculation or an unreliable detector score before their work and credibility are taken away. This conversation became personal after people questioned my effort—and even whether my book opinions could be trusted—because I use AI in parts of my production workflow. The books I read, the reactions I have and the opinions I share are still mine. Using a tool should not erase the human being using it. So where should publishing draw the line? What should a publisher have to prove before cancelling a book? And if you were falsely accused of using AI to write something you created, how would you prove that you didn’t?
