Critical care nursing can be immensely rewarding, but it also carries a significant emotional burden. In this episode, we are joined by Tracy Cartwright and Daniel Hodgkins to explore the psychological and emotional impact of working in critical care settings.
We discuss the realities of caring for patients experiencing serious illness, trauma and end-of-life situations, and the cumulative effect this can have on nurses. We examine how emotional strain can present in practice and explore the differences between burnout and compassion fatigue, including the signs and symptoms nurses should look out for in themselves and their colleagues.
In the second half of the episode, we consider grief, loss, moral distress and the ethical dilemmas that are often encountered in critical care. We reflect on the lasting impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and discuss how leadership, workplace culture and organisational support can help create psychologically safe environments. We conclude with practical advice and strategies to help critical care nurses protect their wellbeing while continuing to provide high-quality patient care.
