Hazara University at a Glance — History Hazara University Mansehra was established under the Hazara University Act, passed by the Provincial Assembly of the then-NWFP (now Khyber Pakhtunkhwa) on 29 April 1997. It became operational a few years later when the then-Governor of KP took the step of establishing the university in 2001, housed in old buildings vacated from the Neuropsychiatry Hospital, Dhodial, and the Agriculture Department. It was formally inaugurated on 14 April 2002. Location & Setting The campus sits about 14 kilometers north of Mansehra town, on the right flank of the Karakoram Highway, in a peaceful, pollution-free environment surrounded by pine groves, with views toward the forested hills and the snow-capped peaks of the Kaghan Valley in the distance. The university sits at the crossroads of the ancient Gandhara civilization and faces the old Silk Route, historically linking the subcontinent with China and Central Asia. Notably, the land itself has a philanthropic history — a prominent local landowner, Haji Abdul Hanan Khan Swati, donated the land in Dhodial that first housed a mental hospital, built by Pakistan's first health minister, which was later transformed into the university. Resilience & Growth The university's early years were tested by the devastating 2005 earthquake, but it sustained its academic and administrative functions and continued to progress. Since then, it has diversified into faculties including Arts, Sciences, Law, and specialized fields such as Archaeology, reflecting the region's rich historical and cultural heritage. Today it operates through four Faculties, 31 Departments, and more than 100 academic programmes.
