Drama As Babachir Lawal Blows Open Atiku’s Alleged Plot Against Peter Obi 2027 - Tinubu, ADC, NDC.

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation Babachir Lawal has made a major claim about the behind-the-scenes negotiations involving Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi before opposition forces eventually moved into separate camps ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election. Lawal claims Atiku personally called him and asked him to persuade Peter Obi to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and become Atiku’s vice-presidential running mate. According to Lawal, the proposal involved an Atiku–Obi ticket serving for four years, followed by an effort to amend Nigeria’s Constitution to introduce a single six-year presidential term, under an arrangement he says would later benefit Obi. But Peter Obi has directly disputed that account. Speaking on Arise TV, Obi said he was never presented with such an offer and therefore could not have rejected it: “I wasn’t even in a position where that was being offered, and I refused.” The conflicting accounts have reopened questions about what really happened during opposition negotiations and how discussions involving Atiku, Obi and other political figures eventually broke down. Lawal also explains his earlier relationship with Atiku, saying he had once wanted to work with the former vice president but could not do so while serving under former President Muhammadu Buhari because he did not believe in divided loyalty. After Buhari left office, Lawal says he became available for new political cooperation. The former SGF further recounts efforts to mobilise Aminu Tambuwal and other Northern political figures around a common strategy ahead of 2027. According to him, discussions initially centred on building a Northern political bloc that could eventually support an agreed presidential candidate through coordinated voting. Lawal subsequently moved toward the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and publicly backed the Peter Obi–Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso ticket for 2027. His political journey—from discussions with Atiku and participation in the ADC coalition to allegations against the party and eventual support for Obi and Kwankwaso—adds another layer to the increasingly complicated opposition battle. The interview also touches on Lawal’s controversial criticism of the prospect of an Atiku presidency, including his description of it as continuing what he calls a “Muslim-Fulani” power monopoly. That characterization is Lawal’s political claim, not a description of an ethnic or religious group as a whole.
